Reading four to five books during the summer is potentially powerful enough to prevent a decline in reading achievement from spring to fall. (Kim, 2004) My goal is to have students select 4 books and read them during the summer break. Our scholars live in homes filled with love, but their homes have few or no books. When they are in school, they read in the classroom. They read in the library. You will even see them reading in the cafeteria. I want to keep this momentum going. To do this, I will do what research says and let each scholar select four books to take home and read during the summer. The level of books will vary which means each scholar should find books they can read. There will be a variety of genres. This should make it easier for them to find books they will love. For some of our scholars just having books would be enough to get them reading. However, many scholars need a little nudge that will make them pick up a book and read. Scholars told me that an out of the uniform pass, a pizza party, and a gift certificate from Walmart or Target would make great reading incentives. Therefore, scholars will receive these items based on the number of books they read. Providing scholars with books to read and reading incentives will inspire them to read throughout the break leading to a summer without a reading slide.
