Flexible seating is by far the most favorable aspect of my classroom. Not only do students oppose the idea of sitting at a desk for 90 minutes, which is catastrophic for eighth graders who are accustomed to 50 minute blocks and an inclusion setting, but having the flexibility to sit in area that's comfortable, peaceful and inviting impacts the mood of each pupil. Not only are they relaxed, but students are motivated to complete their coursework at a pace and level that's feasible and unique to them. At least that's my aim! However, small handmade cushions aren't enough to get the job done, especially when lengthy reads are enforced. My students need a work space that will allow them to strategically think out learning process. Examples include but isn't limited to annotating a text effectively and citing textual evidence for a text dependent analysis writing prompt. By adding in the couch, not only will I be able to monitor their activity and outward production when administering an assignment but I can also work with them one on one or I could pull my enrichment group (students needing extra support) without disturbing the flow of the other students. The couch, of course, will serve many purposes and I need your help in tackling them all.
