As our students grow older and develop the ability to read on their own, the amount of time spend reading aloud to them often decreases, both at home and in school. Independent reading frequently becomes the focus of parents and teachers when students reach the upper elementary grades. Although independent reading time is vital to student success, so is read aloud time. This project will help me to increase the amount of time my students get read to each day. Quality read aloud books give students the opportunity to build their vocabulary, hear fluent and expressive reading, and to practice reading skills. The books I am requesting for my classroom are all high quality mentor texts that will help me to teach my students essential reading skills such as inferring, making predictions, understanding point of view, and identifying central message. These skills are vital to student' success in reading, both in the classroom and beyond.
