In the age of the Internet, where kids spend a lot of their free time behind a screen, real interpersonal skills are critical. Being able to succinctly articulate your ideas is one of the greatest skills one can develop. It’s these skills that are an unintended benefit of The Workshop Model. In turn, those students have practiced actively communicating with one another about how to best solve math problems. The Workshop Model is where students engage in mathematics in three key ways: 1) by solving specifically designed problems 2) collaborating with their peers to discuss their problem-solving 3) presenting their solutions to one another in a “math expert” type role. Having a safe place for leveled groups to meet is critical to the success of our mathematical conversations. Students are able to gather in leveled groups in an environment that emphasizes the importance of their voice and problem solving strategies. Help me provide a designated area for these middle school students to explore and find a passion for math. This outdoor seating area is durable, long lasting, and the perfect size for a small group of 6-8 students to meet together and find their inner math expert.
