Each day in New Orleans, students often walk into school having already experienced stressful situations before setting foot in the classroom. They may not have had enough sleep the night before, got into a fight with their caregiver, witnessed a scary situation, experienced trauma or had an argument with a student on the long bus ride in. Many of the heavy and big emotions that our students feel can be seen in and felt in the classroom often through their behaviors. It is our job as educators and support staff to teach more than academics but also how to cope with life's realities. With the use of the Classroom Coping Tools, students will have the opportunity to practice coping skills and self soothing techniques when experiencing stress, conflict and challenging moments. For example, if a seven year old is feeling overwhelmed upon arrival at school due to a recent loss and is expressing this through crying. This child can then ask to utilize the special Classroom Coping Tools to reset by sitting under the weighted blanket, focus on the liquid timer and taking deep breaths until they are calm enough to communicate with a trusted adult. Many of the items necessary for this project have been selected specifically due to the evidence of their success with helping children address sensory and emotional needs.
