How can I expect these kids to be avid readers if I can't provide them with the kinds of books that appeal to them? The majority of the books in my classroom library belonged to me, so they relate to my interests, but I'm already a reader! If I hope to encourage my students to read for pleasure, I have to offer them access to books that appeal to their interests. The goal is to provide books in which students see themselves and their experiences, books to which my diverse students can relate. If I can do that, I hope to see more kids choosing to read for fun!
