In order to give students more access to the outdoors, we started the Outdoors club where students can build their leadership skills, practice team building, and learn about themselves while learning about the outdoors. We go on after school field trips once a month. Each trip gives students the opportunity to explore a different part of the South Texas and a different outdoor sport. We are requesting equipment for our outdoors club for fishing, camping, and hiking. We incorporate social emotional learning, team building activities, and leadership skills into the preparation for and reflection on each trip. As a result, in addition to giving students the opportunity to be exposed to different parts of Texas and different outdoor activities, we also give students the chance to bond with students from whom they are usually separated. We hope that in discovering more about the outdoors, students will also discover more about themselves. Hurricane Harvey directly impacted Texas including the South Texas Region where we live. We saw a direct impact on Farmers and an impact in the local community farming industry. The impact left South Texas communities without homes and schools.
