Access to engaging books is vital to the success of my classroom. Most of the class novel sets we have are outdated and seemingly uninteresting to my students. Novel study is not just about the books, but about how students can individually apply the lessons they learn into their own lives. Picture books can also contain valuable life lessons but are often overlooked because they are for "little kids." For some reason, we stop reading to our kids once they move on to middle school. In my classroom, I read picture books aloud to my 7th-10th graders. The books serve as mentor texts and writing prompts. Picture books provide engaging content that allows students to reflect on the past, present and ponder their future. In addition to being read to, my high school students have the opportunity to read these picture books aloud to elementary students. I take my students to the K-6 building where they read with their "reading buddy." The elementary students love reading with their "big kid," and it gives my students the opportunity to see themselves a role model to those younger kids. This project includes a variety of books that will give my students an opportunity to read and write using their own creativity.
