"This book is AH-MAZING, Ms. Tremmel!" "I already finished our assigned reading because I couldn't put it down!" "This is the first book I've read in AGES, Ms. Tremmel. Did you really have to go and make me LIKE reading?!" Real words from the mouths of REAL kids who have long since forgotten that reading can be fun. As a high school English teacher, I strive to inspire a "can't stop, won't stop" attitude towards reading among my students. Unfortunately, I'm up against a lot. All of my students come to my room with at least some sort of reading-based baggage that weighs down their willingness to dive into a new story. More often than not, this baggage has at least something to do with limited access to contemporary, culturally relevant texts in the classroom. Don't get me wrong - a lot (if not most) of my kids have access to public libraries, as well as personal funds to spend on books. But as a teacher, there's something tangibly powerful and transcendent in the act of placing a book in a student's hands - looking her in the eye as I say exactly why I think THIS book would be perfect for HER. In this moment, a spark is ignited. A new opportunity is gifted. A light finally shines on the wonder that's been hibernating deep in their imaginations. Building a classroom library is something I've tried to tackle on my own for some time. But your support will allow my curriculum to evolve in seriously impactful ways. Countless research supports the benefits of consistent, sustained independent reading throughout young adulthood. The more texts we have immediately accessible in our classroom, the more exciting and individualized our studies will become.
