I am dedicated to creating a sense of community and family within our classroom. It is so important to me and to the students that everybody feels safe, comfortable, accepted, and cared for when they are in our classroom. A comfy area rug would be a gathering place to help build and encourage that sense of community. I would run out of space before I could list all the ways a rug would benefit our classroom; the possibilities are endless! I envision my students coming together on the rug for number talks, mini-lessons, math games, read-alouds, etc. I see students on the rug to support their peers as they share work. I see students on the rug engaged in meaningful discussions. Perhaps we are having a morning meeting or an end-of-the-day check-in. Regardless of the use, our classroom rug would be a place where everybody is welcome and everybody feels like they are part of the family that exists within our classroom.
