As a teacher of six different social studies classes, I like to give my students opportunities to explore content in a nonconventional way. Simulations and hands-on activities are prefered, when applicable, as I found that students tend to learn content and lessons in a way that applies directly to them. Board games with social studies-related content are a perfect way to do this. I will use games, such as Life and Monopoly, to demonstrate sociology, political, and even historical concepts. Having access to these games allows me to work creatively and make any changes to rules and put on special "spins" to relate the game directly to the content. This year, I borrowed a few Monopoly boards from around the school to have one class of mine play to demonstrate how the balance of power and class structure works, and they all gave great feedback and talked about that day for weeks! Aside from content-related lessons, board games allow students to work strategically and analytically to solve problems--two skills that are important to teaching social studies. The games that I have chosen would open up a variety of wonderful opportunities for my students. As I tell my students, I like to have fun in my classroom, and I love to teach my content, so why not combine the two!
