Every morning my co-teacher, paraprofessional and I welcome our 29 third grade ICT students at the door of our classroom. We say good morning, and they respond in unison. We try and start off with welcoming each child, and checking in with as many as we can. Our students don't come from much, and they don't have a whole lot when they come to school. We are in a low income neighborhood in New York City, primarily populated by families who have recently immigrated to the U.S. from Bangladesh and Latin America. Many come without home support, without supplies, but not without spirit. They are eager to learn, excited for what each day will bring. As they grow older, they become more aware of the realities of the world they live in, and aggression and frustration become forerunners in our day. Some kids need a place to cool down, regain composure, before rejoining the class. Simply put, they need a “Cozy Corner."
