The #1 issue I find with regard to student struggles is that they believe math to just be a process where you push around numbers until you get to THE right answer. The most efficient way to break students of this mindset is to give them a calculator. This pushes their brains to not worry about how to multiply decimals or square two-digit numbers. Instead, the brain power gets distributed to making sense of the concepts and finding connections to previous learning. The fact of the matter is that real math always happens with the aid of a calculator. If I want my students to participate in authentic math, then I need to give them the same tools that they would have in the real world.
