One of the units we have is about industrialization and inventions. The goal is to weave the inventions theme all year long. So these materials will be used each quarter to connect to an invention in that era. They will have the power to design and work together in collaborative groups. So, every nine weeks, I am going to devote a few days of instruction for them to design, create, and imagine a product that connects to the lessons. They will be able to interact, present, and construct their vision to the class. Then we will have a showcase, document it on a blog, and of course, unfortunately, dismantled to use them for future activities. Then, their peers from another grade level will determine which designs will win a prize for creativity. It will not only be an academically assessed grade, but a challenge that will be rewarded outside of assessment. My inspiration has been my 8 years old son who has been in love with Legos, and we utilize it into creative play. When I have shared these stories with the sophomores, they ultimately talk about how much fun they were and would still use. So, my goal is to bring this real world connection to my classroom.
