Most of my students have significant communication difficulties with how they are currently communicating. Right now a third of my students need a more appropriate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device in order to learn core vocabulary. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems are a way to provide students who do not have the ability to speak an alternative way to communicate and have a voice in our autism classroom. AAC provides our students an opportunity to request, interact with others, make friends, let us know how they feel and engage in the home and academic environment more independently. I am asking for a class iPad dedicated for Proloquo2go, which is an AAC program recommended by the Department of Education for use in teaching non-verbal children core vocabulary. Proloquo2go is a program that is used on an iPad that provides student access to alternative ways to communicate. It is a core vocabulary word-based system. Core vocabulary words are the most commonly used words in the English language. They provide multi-functional words to express a range wants and needs. It enables students to do more than say "I want ..." using a picture exchange communication system (PECS). Instead, it allows minimally verbal and non-verbal students to socially engage with other students and staff, and engage in academics. Our class has been using paper boards with the core word system along with a picture exchange communication system (PECS). Many of our students are excelling using the paper boards, and cannot progress any further with their picture exchange communication system (PECS) due to PECS limitations. Using an iPad with Proloquo2go installed will greatly increase their vocabulary and would provide an incredible addition to their ability to communicate.
