The math materials we currently have at my school are incomplete or broken. They are sad looking, taped together, and have lasted far beyond the expected lifespan of a classroom tool. At the kindergarten level, it is absolutely critical that students develop number sense and master basic addition and subtraction, as this will lay the foundation for their math instruction for the rest of their lives. Young elementary children learn in a variety of ways, and having maipulatives to touch and work with makes math concepts come to life. By being able to hold every object as they explore mathematical concepts they gain much needed fluency in arithmetic and cardinality. Additionally, moving away from worksheets into cooperative play invites students to have conversations with each other about their thinking as they problem solve together. By having a variety of math learning tools I will be able to differentiate instruction for a variety of learners while keeping students engaged and focused on their learning. All children deserve to have the resources they need to be successful in school, and my students will make good use of these tools.
