Our curriculum always a lot of teacher flexibility in the 4th quarter, and I have always used that to teach "The Outsiders." With all of the other texts we read during the year, there are some students that like them and some student's that don't. However, "The Outsiders" is an extremely high engagement novel, especially for my boys, and I have never met a student that didn't enjoy the book. In fact, I have had a plethora of students tell me that "The Outsiders" was the first book they ever truly enjoyed. "The Outsiders" is a rich coming of age story, filled with themes and symbols of identity, friendship, and family. Characterization is abounding and creating Common Core questions for the novel was a task that came naturally. Sadly, our schools' copies have slowly become unusable in their condition, with pages falling out or ripped in nearly every copy, and a good portion of the covers missing. A request to the administration for more copies was rejected, and it's looking like, for the first time, I won't be able to teach the novel. My largest class is 31, and a copy for me would mean I would need 32 copies to effectively teach the novel.
