The addition of a Mindstorms Education EV3 Core Set to our classroom will form the foundation of our new middle school robotics program. Having the set will allow my students to expand their technology and critical thinking skills as we explore real world solutions to more complex science, engineering, and math challenges. For some this will be their first encounter with robotics, for others it will be a chance to teach their peers about a whole new world. For all, it will be an exciting opportunity to try out ideas and apply them to a new year's content. Some ideas can only be explored with robotics! Students exposed to cutting edge technology and its applications in middle school will often transition towards gratifying STEM careers. Robotics is one of these important technologies that demands creativity, critical thinking, and skill. To be successful ahead, my students will need the foundation to be able to learn skills fundamental to a digital world we can only imagine today. Mindstorms will help build that foundation. We will use the Mindstorms Set and the existing Lego curriculum compatible with our new state science standards as a starting point, then we will soar ahead to address new standards-based challenges as skills develop and questions fly. Classroom activities will include lessons related to forces and Newton's Laws, environmental measurement, finding solutions to scenario based challenges, measurements of rates, studying patterns, earth science events, and coding. The set will also be available for independent exploration during open learning time. To increase involvement, I plan to make the set available to other classes and our STEM Club. By sharing the set beyond my classroom, my goal is to encourage all of our students and teachers to build new technology skills into their learning in a fun, engaging way
