The built-in display case outside of my classroom is largely unused. Rather than letting it stay bare, I thought it would be an interesting opportunity for my students to construct a Green Wall. This will help students learn how to solve problems in a real-world situation by working hands-on on a challenging task. Students taking AP Environmental Science, Living Environment and in the Green Thumb Club will work collaboratively in completing and using the Green Wall. With the materials we receive, my students will be able to help construct a living wall that benefits the entire school. Once finished, they will have feelings of accomplishment in beautifying their learning environment. Students taking AP Environmental Science will use the garden to study water efficiency of the growing system, test the best nutrient levels for will various plant species, will research the type of air impurities that each type of plant removes from ambient air and conduct surveys on how the gardening impacts the school environment. Living Environment students will also use this project for their labs. One lab will consist of students testing the water quality as part of the Human Impact unit and a second lab on the experimental design where students can evaluate different light or other variables on plant growth. With the first public display of nature in the school, I have no doubts it will ultimately educate and raise awareness about sustainability throughout the school and into our community.
