We envision that these books will replace the negative connotation many of our students have about reading. Students already read many informational texts and are learning to strategies to extract information. However, Literature Circles allow students to engage academically with texts they ideally enjoy. We want texts students can enjoy and will find intellectually engaging. All educational research points to the fact that when students engage with texts, when they can see themselves within their texts or avidly read about other ways of life, they will increase comprehension AND be able to practice the strategies they are learning in English. We hope to give our students this chance through purchasing high interest texts.
