My classroom library is deficient in reading options for reluctant readers and many second-language learners. The popularity of graphic novels and graphic novel hybrids has been indicative of our new generation of learners - those students who are entrenched in visual media. Research has proven that graphic novels challenge both reluctant and advanced readers by using text and images to teach reading comprehension strategies (specifically, inference, synthesizing information, sequencing, and word decoding techniques). By providing a variety of graphic novels and graphic novel hybrids, I want to encourage students to grab a non-threatening form of literature that actually 1.) ignites their interest and passion for reading, 2.) challenges them both abstractly and concretely, and 3.) introduces them to a past time devoid of electronic stimulation. Please help me add this new form of literature into my classroom library!
