Students need to read on a daily basis, and I believe that they need choice, whenever I can! Books such as The Hate U Give, Dumplin', and Every Day, will allow students to see and discuss contemporary issues. My students experience all sorts of things in their lives, from poverty, to homelessness, to bi-racial families (in a very white community), to adoption, to teen pregnancy, even to identity issues. I want them to have books to identify with, where they can see themselves reflected, or at least see how others' feel. It is important to me to give my students more choice, but to also allow them to see themselves in novels and discuss!
