My goal is to create lifelong learners through hands-on experiences. This year I would love for my students to have the opportunity to learn about the life cycle of a chicken and experience chicks hatching in our classroom. Having an incubator and models of the life cycle will allow students to see this process happen before their eyes. This unit will give every student a hands-on experience of seeing the process of a chicken's life cycle. We will study the changes the embryo goes through each day using visuals and models. We will also discuss the optimal conditions for hatching chicks in an incubator, and discuss how our environment is similar and different to the way hatching occurs in nature. Candling the eggs halfway through incubation also allows for discussions about whether eggs are fertilized or not and allows students the experience of seeing the embryo develop while still in the egg. After only 21 days our class will be able to watch the eggs hatch! Students will be able to personally interact with the baby chicks and watch their growth and development in the weeks after they hatch. Throughout this process we will document our learning with photographs, writing, and discussions. I hope that this experience will encourage students to pursue a career pathway that they maybe had not thought of before.
