I call it the big three: math, reading, and writing. Expectations have increased year after year as students are increasingly capable of retaining a variety of academic skills. But one thing I've learned throughout my career is that the social curriculum is just as important, if not, more so in elementary classrooms. Play is the most important part of our day; in or outside of school. Play gives students the practice they need in order to communicate effectively, express their feelings, share, demonstrate their creativity, and practice problem-solving skills. Legos, board games, and outdoor play equipment are the perfect toys to accomplish all of these things! Over the past few years, I've collected items to use during recess in my classroom although many items become well used, lost or misplaced. To watch my students interact and engage through play is incredibly gratifying. To see their smiles, hear their laughter and listen to their conversations around play emphasizes why we do what we do. My own hope is to provide them with valuable tools that will be fun for years to come!
