Many of my students have expressed their desire to release the hurt that has built up inside. The hurt often looks like anger. They feel this pain and they want to hurt something in return. Some have self-mutilated in an attempt to ease the hurt. Many students will look for a fight or even punch walls. They do not yet have the ability to manage their ever-changing emotions. Punching bags give them a safe and constructive object to release the anger and pain. Knowing it is available to them could be the difference in learning to safely manage emotions versus choosing to damage themselves.
