With the support of my principal I developed the first of its kind science program at our school. The 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students come to the science lab twice a week for Life Science hands-on activities. I emphasize the Next Generation Science Standards, which gives our students a heads up as these standards won't be mandated in our district until 2017. This year I am building on to the program by offering engineering projects to my 6th grade students. Investigations are inquiry based. Students research and hypothesize in partners and groups, then proceed through a series of steps based on the scientific method and ultimately make evidence-based conclusions. My students have responded very favorably whenever I can incorporate technology; I know I must provide more such learning opportunities to increase their chances of success in future grades, and help them to become college and career ready.
