As a reading teacher, I am always encouraging discussion. Whether it is a close read, book clubs, mini-lessons, or small groups, students are always engaged with one another in discussion. Right now, desks are not the best option to encourage a classroom of collaboration. While desks are easy to move, the small space in the classroom and the movement of the students throughout the day does not make it a safe option. The rooms in our school are not very big, and desks take up a lot of room. Tables would allow for easier movement of the students and better discussion among them. Often throughout the class, students are reading different novels at their levels. If we had tables, it would make for quicker transitions and the ability to have the students reading the same novels at different tables to discuss what they are reading. It would also allow for reading groups to move about the room from station to station as we can set the different stations up at different tables. Having this option would help cut down on transition time and allow for more teaching within the classroom.
