My students need a variety of materials for their morning tubs to provide them with a way to start their school days in a manner that is more hands-on than paper and pencil morning work and is more welcoming than telling them to be quiet and get to work. Rather than greeting my students at the door and immediately reminding them to get started on their morning work, I plan on having them come in and have an opportunity to ask their classmates how they are feeling that day over a friendly conversation that they can have while playing with connecting cubes, legos, or a puzzle. Many adults like to have a cup of coffee before they start their work for the day, so why can't I provide my students with a pleasant way to start their day off rather than making them hit the ground running with rote morning work? My team of 2nd grade teachers at my school have come to realize from our experiences with the traditional review worksheets used as morning work is no longer the most effective way to use time in the mornings, especially when we ran out of time to go over the answers, had students that could finish the work in two minutes, or students that struggled to get any of the work done . During the time when students are allowed to arrive in our classrooms and unpack their backpacks before the first bell rings for the start of school is a bustling time in our building, and is a great time to let kids be kids and turn their thinking caps on in a way that allows them to explore, create, and communicate with classmates!
