Our students love the robotics program we started, but it only goes to fourth grade. We want to expand the program and help foster future engineers and scientific thinkers! This project will buy two LEGO EV3 sets that the students will need to participate in the FIRST LEGO League. In completing the LEGO program, students show their ideas by building with the LEGOs. That provides a hands-on way for children to express their thoughts. They create and design solutions to a variety of problems using LEGOs that can be coded using Blockly type coding to solve a variety of engineering problems. They must work as a team of up to seven students when solving the problems. Students gain experience in working as part of a team and in solving real life problems in a hands-on way. The LEGO First program has brought many of our students something they can’t otherwise get. The students love them, and to participate they have had to learn teamwork, how to carefully read directions, and how to code the instructions for their robots to complete. The LEGOs have provided a motivation for everyone to participate, and have provided an outlet for each of them to be successful. Few other opportunities have provided such a hands-on way for students to develop their creativity.
