When my students walk into my classroom each morning, I want them to feel empowered, which will enable them to have some control over our classroom environment. When allowing the students to have an option, it will let them choose their positions and locations within the classroom of how they feel they will learn the best that day. Using flexible seating will also help with keeping students more alert because when they are allowed to rock, lean, stand, etc. It increases oxygen to the brain which allows students to be more alert and focused. Flexible seating will also allow collaboration to occur more efficiently because students can quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, and have whole class discussions without moving desks. Flexible seating allows the students to be more self-aware of the seating types and the environment in which they learn best. When using this type of seating, it builds skills towards independent learning so they can become proactive learners instead of reactive learners. I want to be able to give my students that option and encourage them to use those opportunities to choose and be an active part in his/her learning.
