The students in my middle-school language arts classes come from diverse families on the south side of Santa Monica. These students face obstacles in learning to write much greater than typically developing students; they are, however, equally anxious to learn. A technological boost can help level the playing field, giving them a chance to succeed. There are web-based programs designed to help K-12 students learn to write; these programs are especially helpful for special needs learners and most effective when a set of good headphones enables each student to hear and dictate clearly. My students are understandably frustrated in their attempts to write coherent sentences and paragraphs, but respond well to assistive technology. We have tried cheaper headphones that buzz, break, and make more difficult the recognition of speech. The requested headphones should remove a barrier to learning these students should not have to face.
