Our school as a whole is located in a community that would be considered of low socioeconomic status. Five years ago the school was failing, but thanks to a new principal and a drastic increase in both rigor and high expectations, the school is now a model for success at the middle school level. However, we still don't have all the resources at our disposal that would help us to close the achievement gap between my students and their wealthier, private-school peers. The fact is that my students are eager to expand their minds and are hungry for books that speak to them, that draw them in, that take them away to a world only found in print. Most of these students have never left their neighborhood, let alone travel on exciting adventures. For most, reading is their one-way ticket to experiencing the world.
