As students and staff work to return nature to the prairie fields located behind our elementary school, Kindergarten students will work on releasing butterflies back into this breathtaking environment. With grant monies awarded through this project, Kindergarten students will study butterflies, watch as they grow from chrysalis to butterfly, and experience the joy of releasing them into the environment. Our kids are filled with wonder at the natural environment that surrounds our beautiful school. This wonder and curiosity makes raising butterflies this spring an excellent project and learning opportunity for Kindergarten students. Students will receive hands-on experiences about the life cycle of butterflies from caterpillars to butterflies. They will explore the science of butterflies, while enhancing their reading, writing and math skills. Raising these butterflies in our classroom will allow the students to observe and talk about what they see as they watch the life cycle progress in front of their eyes. Help us bring this project to the Kindergarten students at our elementary. Raising butterflies in the classroom will provide numerous opportunities for students to read, write, observe, explore and talk about what is happening as a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. This project will provide a hands on experience that will make the learning process more meaningful for our young students. In addition, the release of the butterflies into the prairie grounds will allow other students to spot these beautiful creatures.
