Students need to have the opportunity to work and learn in a focused and regulated environment. Too often, we neglect that students need this to be successful in the classroom and all the while, they are losing their passion for literacy. With some great books and instruction around regulation, my students will deeply benefit from having the chance to have a special place in my classroom where they can go, calm themselves down, and engage deeply in a great book. I want to instill the love of learning back into my students and share my passion with them for literacy. Using shelving units, I will be able to create a focused and calming space that students can utilize to immerse themselves in self-selected literature. This space will give students the ability to distance themselves from distraction while engaging and creating meaning from their journey through reading. Providing students with flexible seating in a focused space will give them access to comfort while preserving their energy and increasing their excitement for literacy. It gives them choice beyond the confinement of their desks and reading in a way that is most comfortable for them. Adding new and engaging youth adult literature will allow students the opportunity to connect with new and relevant texts with conflicts that are real for the students. While students have access to all the classics in my classroom, being able to give them a library of new young adult literature will make reading exciting and meaningful.
