I would like to implement daily independent reading in my classroom, but in order to do so, I need a classroom library. We all know that it just takes one good book to hook a kid on reading, and I’m hoping to get my students to love reading this year! I need access to current, high-quality, high-interest young adult literature. So often my students complain that they hate reading. They argue that it's boring, too hard, too irrelevant, too forced, and too time-consuming. However, more often than not, students who feel this way aren't reading the right book. The books in this project are high-interest texts and texts in which my students can see their identities, strengths, challenges, and hopes reflected in compelling characters. From fantasy to LBGTQ to current events, my students are interested in the way books can be a pathway to deeper exploration of the world we share. They chose this year's titles with that goal in mind, and I hope to continue allowing them an avenue to question and discuss such important issues.
