In addition to individual work time, each day, students work in three different small groups, with multiple peers. They collaborate in math groups, reading circles, and writing clubs. Flexible seating allows students to take control of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. My students have become creative in finding "flex seating" in our classroom. Not only are our traditional classroom desks used, but students will read and create videos under their desks, use clipboards to sit on the floor and work together, or lay in a circle with materials in the center. Giving my students new and comfortable spaces to explore and create is vital to their success. They are consistently more engaged, have higher levels of critical thinking, and remain more focused on discussions and assignments. I have noticed incredible improvements in student learning when given the opportunity to move around throughout the day. It can also help highly active students get their wiggles out, in order to apply their full attention to assigned tasks. Furthermore, my students live in an area with extreme climate, some days reach a high temperature of 120 degrees. When this occurs they are not given ample opportunity to exercise or socialize outside of the classroom. Increased areas of comfortable seating can help reduce boredom, fidgeting, and restlessness of sitting in one place for long periods. The recliner seats, and stools can allow for different sitting positions more comfortably. The lap desks give more students the chance leave their desk and move around to create work with a stable surface. I have seen how movement and different seating positively impacts classroom attitudes, and increases active learning.
