Do you remember getting hooked on a series of books as a child? The thrill of finding a new favorite author? I want my students to experience this feeling frequently this year. My students are eager, passionate readers who are yearning for a wider variety of books. In fact, my students recently finished a persuasive writing unit, and multiple students wrote essays about why we need more books for our classroom library. As a first year teacher, I have collected a modest library, but am in need of novel titles that will captivate my community of readers. In my classroom, I follow the workshop model for reading, which allows plenty of student choice. I have selected books based on my students' choice as well as recommendations from other third grade classes. Students need the opportunity to practice the skills they are learning in authentic circumstances. Given the opportunity to select "just-right" books of interest, my students will be able to flourish as readers.
