I'm the new librarian at my small public school. As I've worked to develop our collection, I've found that the picture book section is lacking in diversity. We need more books by and about people from diverse backgrounds. Books like those in Brad Meltzer's I Am series are attractive to young students and provide lots of information in a compelling format. Biographies about inspiring people and fiction by diverse authors/illustrators help to open windows onto the wider world for my young students. Without diverse books, students aren't exposed to a diverse world. New books will help open the world to my students.
