Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher is full of real-life situations that many of my students face daily. It deals with tough topics, including abuse, bullying, peer pressure, and obesity, among other things. It approaches these topics honestly and openly. This book is narrated by a high school boy, so it is also hilariously funny. My students deserve to know that they are not alone in the world. This book deals with issues that students have experienced. Reading this allows them to feel empathy and explore their own reactions to events in their lives in a safe space. This book is captivating and real; it hooks students in almost immediately. This is important for my population of reluctant readers. Developing a culture of reading (and reading independently!) is vital to create literate members of society.
