Organization skills are key to a productive learning environment. As a first year special education teacher I have learned a lot about what my students and staff need to ensure that our time is focused on our students growth. Every item has been well thought out and has a "home" in the classroom and will be utilized every day. When everything has a place and is thoroughly organized, my students will gain hands on experience that, "organizing is what you do, before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up (A.A Milne)".My students will then be able to take this skill and use it in every aspect of their classroom. They will be able to make the connection that it is easier to write a paragraph when they have brainstormed beforehand. Their science experiment goes easier when they have read the directions first. And most importantly, their learning comes easier when they are able to move a cart to their station that offers them a variety of items they need to visualize a question. At the moment, our classroom provides all of these accommodations, but they are all in different locations throughout the room. By purchasing a cart or file organizer you are helping our class simplify things by creating one space that holds all of the tools a student could possibly need. This will then allow them to easily find a pencil, number line, crayons, etc for their work. It also gives them the option to bring the cart to them when needed.
