The Book Club runs throughout the school year (approx. 36 weeks). Members read one book title per month during the school year (equalling 9-10 books read throughout the school year). The mission of the Book Club is to expand the personal literacy experience of our students by reading and discussing works selected by the students in a friendly, open atmosphere and cultivate a sense of belonging among immigrant and minority youth. The Book Club provides students with a fun, no pressure environment where they can read books, talk about them, and have a sense of belonging. Our vision is to enhance students experience by allowing them to keep the books they read so they can begin to build their own book collection, a reward which is well-deserved for taking time out of their already hectic school schedule. Reading for pleasure offers many academic and personal benefits which help students mature and develop into stronger individuals. Studies have proven that students who read for pleasure have higher SAT scores, stronger reading comprehension skills, stronger writing skills, enriched vocabulary, and improved focus and memory. Reading for pleasure also helps students de-stress, explore their emotions, better understand other people and points of view, and gain self-confidence. Contemporary young adult fiction and titles that are culturally relevant address issues that many teens experience today. We urgently need funding to purchase books so that students will not be excluded due to the club economic need. Members have recruited several of their friends to join the book club based on their positive experience. Presently, the book club has 28 members, a growth of 38% from last year. The impact of partial or reduced funding will result in fewer numbers of students being able to participate and would restrict the students choice of books to read.
