Julia Donaldson wrote, "I opened a book and in I strode, and now no one can find me..." Reading is important in my room.In our room, we have the rights of readers and respect each other's right to read. My students have a very wide range of reading levels and interests. They are all in different places in their own personal journeys towards living a readerly life, but everyone is making great strides towards their own personal goals for reading. They share their enthusiasm and recommendations for books with others, as well as respect each other's rights to read what they want. We also respect and acknowledge the fine writing we can find in books. With this project, I would like to give them an amazing assortment of books at their disposal for free reading. Many of the titles I am asking for are on the Kentucky Bluegrass Award book lists, such as Anima's Voice and The Big Bad Fox, which always represents a wide range of topics and genres as well as multiple reading levels. Others one the list are kid picks, like James Patterson and Andrew Clements. The purpose of this project is to continue to encourage and promote regular and wide reading by the students in my classroom. I know the importance of encouraging these young readers to find books and authors that they love- A love of books is something that they will carry with them as they continue in their lives. I can change their lives from the inside out…. "My chair and my house are just the same, But I have a book inside."
