My students are working on a functional curriculum. Every part of their academics is tied into real-life situations that the student will be apart of or all already a part of. The materials that we use help with the students practicing everyday, necessary skills that are not a part of the traditional academic setting. Skills like being able to speak up for one's self, how to interview for a job, when to pay your bills on time. Those materials are as follows: Steps to Independent Living, Social Skills Readers and Guides, Learning About Life Curriculum, High-Interest Reading, Life Skills Math Books, Life Skills Academics Literacy. Each of these items will allow students to continue to develop their strengths and and improve on the individual weaknesses in social skills,self-advocacy, employ-ability,and communication . Our class is not just about pure academics, but about being able to learn the necessary skills to live, work, and play that many people take for granted.
