The books within my classroom drive much of my instruction throughout the day. Within the context of books, so much can be taught. During read-alouds, we focus on story elements such as author/illustrator. We also focus on the setting, characters, and plot of the story. We also talk about new words to build upon their current vocabulary skills. In Dr. Seuss books, we explore fiction and how the author uses fictional creatures and words to create a joy-filled learning experience for my Kindergarten students. We also have various units during the year in which books are extremely necessary within our teaching, such as pumpkins, US symbols, and various holidays.
