My budding mathematicians and scientists are in need of graphing calculators! From the day they walk in as freshmen, they are collecting and and analyzing data using regression lines (starting with linear, quadratic, and exponential during the first two weeks). They continue this work, learning how to model and analyze real world scenarios using functions throughout their four years of math. These functions are often very difficult to visualize and graph by hand as they contain complexities beyond what is necessary to do by hand. The calculators also help students investigate and "discover" new concepts, make connections among topics, and avoid just "memorizing" ideas. This has helped us to develop a true passion for math and science among our students. We do not want to "push" students away from these rigorous learning experiences because of lack of technology access. This is our school's first year offering AP Calculus, and we have almost 70 juniors and seniors (in a school of under 400 9th - 12th graders) enrolled. The course requires access to graphing calculators to access certain topics and a portion of the AP exam allows students to use them. Unfortunately, we do not have enough graphing calculators for class sets and our budget cannot cover what we need. Help our students know how to use a graphing calculator before entering the course as to not be at a major disadvantage compared to their peers. Having consistent access to this technology will help my students' mathematical and scientific skills develop and provide them with the 21st century skills needed to be successful in college and beyond. Thank you for helping me make this possible!
