I would like to provide my students with flexible, comfortable, and fun seating options to better engage them in the learning process, and to provide external motivation and rewards for positive behaviors. First graders are highly motivated by tangible incentives they can work towards. Tapping in to this preference is crucial to me as a language teacher, because I am constantly demanding high levels of language output and participation. Providing students with soft, squishy chairs shaped like animals, a bean bag chair, as well as little discs that fit into the squares on our rug, will be both practical in changing up seating, and also appealing to student interests. I am also looking to get a soft soccer ball we can use in the classroom for our morning meeting activities, and for indoor recess games. Speaking Chinese and learning new concepts and vocabulary in a foreign language can be quite taxing. I want students to feel joy when they are learning Chinese, and believe that by appealing to extrinsic motivational factors, I can help them develop intrinsic motivation to work hard and be engaged!
