My students are are amazing and awe-inspiring. The rest of the world considers them to be disadvantaged but that's not how they see themselves. They see themselves as artists, writers, inventors, and readers, and I do too. Every day they come to school eager and ready to learn. Their minds are sponges at this age, absorbing every thing that they see, read, and hear. Our school is located in an extremely low income, urban area. Many of my parents have a hard time providing the basics for their children. The extras, like classroom magazines, are beyond them. I have a hard time accepting that my students are not getting the same opportunities as their suburban counterparts simply by virtue of their socioeconomic status, but my pockets are nowhere near as deep as I need them to be. Won't you please help me to help them?
