Though our school is a high poverty school, we are blessed to have great students. Many come to us in need of nurturing as well as an education. I have students who are homeless, who cannot buy a five dollar book, live in a small apartment with twenty other family members, have restraining orders against abusive parents... They are wonderful kids that deserve an equitable education and the safety only a classroom can provide. Our school just became a charter school, though we are still loosely linked to the district. If our test scores do not improve in five years, we will have to go back to the district. We do not want this to happen as our students deserve the best education we can give them, which they will not get as part of the district. Since our school community is so in need financially, we have very little money we can spend on classroom supplies. It will mean the world to my students if someone out there cares enough to help them.
