I inherited a very outdated library with books that lack diversity and relevance. I was very grateful for it at the time but it's books are mostly directed at middle class, non-diverse audiences. I want my students to love reading and to do that, I want to provide books that inspire and excite them - books that show characters who look like them, author's they can relate to and respect, and pages they can't quit turning. There are a large number of graphic novels in this project as well because the students who usually lack the desire to read are male. Graphic novels provide visual excitement and engage those reluctant readers!
