Our school does not have low level readers available for my students. This means it is especially difficult for me to find high interest texts that are on their reading levels. This novel would be very interesting to my students, help build their reading skills, and help them to see themselves as successful readers. This will allow them to not only read the novel, but also practice literary skills such as identifying themes, determining the meaning of unfamiliar words in context clues, identifying author's purpose, and understanding character development. Students will use this novel as a launching point for their own writing. They will write about a journey they experienced in their own lives as the final assessment.
